If I shift too quickly during aggressive driving, I'm getting a grind when going into third gear.
I think in that situation the shifter is out of alignment due to the rocking of the transverse mounted engine and the sloppiness in the shifter thanks to cost saving measures like plastic bushings.
When I get back from my trip I will be looking at stiffer motor mounts and solid shifter bushings...and possibly a couple of other things.

Are you sure you haven't worn down the synchros for third? Depending on the car, 3rd gear is actually a common one to lose synchros on.

This is a pretty common occurrence for 2.0T VW's. I try to go very easy on the syncros in general (except for the periodic 'spirited' driving).

Yeah, I know in the 1.8t Wolfsburg I had there was a lot of complaints about the synchros wearing because of the engine movement during shifts, but I never really had the problem. Hopefully your issue is just worn mounts and you can sneak them in without removing much.

My MGB has bad synchros on third gear. Unless I sync revs, it wants to grind. But it's British the wiring is what gives me fits. Thanks Obama, I mean Lucas.

well, I'd hope the mounts aren't worn yet, my car only has 31,000 miles on it!
If the mount and bushings don't fix it (which would surprise me), I'll be taking it to the dealer.

I get occasional loss of a side marker light. (new lights from Victoria British) I just rewire the circuit instead of trying to find the problem. Had problems with the brake lights as well. Same, new lights, as well. It's just easier to install a new circuit.

Arg. 90% of the issues are bad grounds/contacts. When stuff goes wonky on my '72 Midget I first off check the fuses...not for being blown but for bad contact. Then it's chase down the grounds and make sure those bullet plugs are making good contact. I'm no purist (Datsun 5 speed installed for example) but my first Midget had a lot of redone wiring and it gave me fits. In fact that's part of the reason I bought the car I have now - an unmolested wiring harness.

Synchro is fooked.
Good news: Synchros are cheap, so are full manual trans rebuild kits for that matter.
Bad news: It's going to take a little bit of work to fix.
If you've never done it before, it's going to take you at least a full weekend to pull the trans, rebuild it, and replace it. I'd replace all wear parts and seals while you're in there, and put a new clutch in while the trans is out. If you've got a leaky rear main seal now is the time to tackle it as well.
